A Word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in setting of silver. A Word at the right time will bring light to the eyes and health to the bones. That is what good words do, that is what the Good Word does.
This meal has been described as an edible sermon. You eat the Word of God. It becomes part of you. It enters into your mouth and your stomach and is digested and its nourishment flows through your arteries and veins and brings life to every organ.
That is what this meal, partaken in faith does. God extends His promises to you, grace and mercy in His Son. The death and life of the Son of God is given to you. You take hold, you examine, smell, see, touch, and taste. You hear the words of institution, the promise of God. You believe. You comprehend and apprehend Christ. Here is Jesus, freely offered to you in the gospel.
All of that and much, much more is contained in this little morsel of bread, this little thimble of wine. Eat this sermon and receive health to your bones.
